Stories from the wonderful world of FLW

  • Reenlistment

Wow, it's been quite a while since I posted anything. Things haven't changed much here at Ft. Leonard Wood. I'll be PCSing to Germany in September, so that will be a welcome change. I also reenlisted last week for another four years. Everyone here has been supportive, but I've gotten a lot of negative comments from other people that I know. And the sad thing is, most of the same people who have talked down on my decision to stay in are prior service. I don't understand why it's such a bad thing. It's my life, if I want to serve it's my choice.

  • A change in the tide

Out somewhere over the horizon, there are a few new options Army-wise that I am considering taking advantage of. As you may or may not know, my MOS is a dying breed. 44C's (Formerly 73C) are among the many admin type MOS's that are being realigned, bringing in more civi's to fill our spots. This means pulling all of us lucky enough (or unlucky enough depending on who you talk to) to get assigned to a DMPO rather than a finance batallion and putting us all in units of action. This is not a bad thing in my eyes, I want that, that's what I enlisted in the first place for, but read on... I discovered today that the 3rd Cav out of Ft. Carson, CO is gearing up to deploy again in late February '05. Which means that they may or may not be taking a finance detachment with them. This would be perfect for me, as I've wanted to goto Carson for well over a year now, but my branch wouldn't move me. All I need to do is call my branch manager and find out if there is an open slot available for me, and hope that I can snatch it up if there is. My other option, which appeals to me a bit more than my UA option, is the Corporal Recruiter Program. The only thing that is preventing me from starting the process of getting my packet together for that is the fact that I'm not sure if the age restriction of 21 years old applies to the CRP. All the information that I've found about the program dictates that I must fit the basic requirements of being a recruiter, but doesn't go into detail as to what parts of the reg that would be. It obviously can't be all of them, as it was written in 1992 when you had to be at least a SGT to qualify. If there isn't an age restriction, or if it is waviable, I'll be good to go. If only USAREC would answer their phones every once in awhile... On a side note, my beret went through the washing machine by mistake tonight. If I had known that doing so would actually make it look and fit better, I'd have done that a looooooong time ago... Spc. B
  • Nope. Don't see it.

Well, first comes many thanks to ArmySteve for setting me up a blog.

I suppose my first post should be a "who I am" post, so here goes. I'm SPC Brandon Butler, currently stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Yes, when they call it Fort Lostinthe Woods, they mean it. I'm a 44C, 73C to those who still hold fast to the old MOS designations. I work with Reserve and National Guard pay, MOB's, DEMOB's, Officer Basic Course students, IRR's, and whatever else gets thrown at me during the day. Oh, and can we say overtime? Yeah buddy.

Remember, only a soldier who complains all the time is truely happy. Once they become quiet, they've already made up their mind that they're leaving.
