The country is being attacked by terrorists and regular forces are coming up short. The leader has decided to expand the forces, and some who have previously served are being called back into ranks. Families are left on short notice, but it is necessary for the good of the country.
Sounds a lot like the recent IRR callups, right? Actually, it is the premise of Mulan, the most recent Disney feature film to come to DVD. As my daughter and I watched it last night, I was really struck by the similarities of the situation in the movie to what my own family has experienced this year. Of course, my daughter isn't about to run off and take her Daddy's place so that he doesn't have to go into the Army (she is only two...), but nonetheless, it was a great opportunity to discuss some of what has gone on with her. It is really hard, as most military spouses with preschoolers will attest, to help children understand WHERE Daddy has gone and WHY. So, I definitely take advantage of every opportunity to help explain things to her, and I recommend that others do the same. I think that children comprehend a lot more than we give them credit for. Unfortunately, they often lack the verbal and emotional skills to discuss what they are perceiving and feeling, so many of these things are internalized. A movie such as this opens up the opportunity to discuss some of these things and to express those feelings.
On a lighter note, Mulan is also a great family film, unlike much of what Disney releases. In many of the other films, the villans are horribly scary (these are supposed to be suitable for children!) and the whole purpose of the story is getting the Princess (whichever one, take your pick) to hook up with whatever handsome but shallow prince happens to be around this time. (Don't get me wrong - I like the Princesses as entertainment, but I am not sure they are the greatest example for my daughter.) The story of Mulan is about honor, devotion to family, and patriotism, which are much more important values to instill in our children, especially in today's world. And in the end, the world is saved and everyone lives happily ever after, of course. Hopefully our IRR story will continue to mirror this fabulous Disney tale as it continues to unfold.
